Lawyer

Job Description: 

• Advise clients (people and businesses) on legal matters

• Perform legal research and interpret laws and regulations 

• Prepare legal documents, for example, wills, contracts, deeds

• Negotiate agreements

• Represent clients in trials and other court proceedings

• Represent clients in transactions, for example, buying a business or real estate

• Supervise legal assistants and paralegals

 

Types of Lawyers: 

• Criminal lawyer

• Trial lawyer

• Corporate/contract lawyer

• Tax lawyer

• International lawyer 

• Environmental lawyer

• Family lawyer 

• Government lawyer 

 

Education Needed/Other Requirements: 

• College bachelor’s degree (4 years)

• LSAT (Law School Admissions Test)

• Juris doctorate (law school) degree (3 years)

• Bar exam / state license

• Advanced legal degree (called an LLM), for certain specialty areas such as tax law and international law
