• Early Education (Nursery / Pre-K) 

• Elementary School (Grades K-5)  

• Middle School (Grades 6-8) 

• High School (Grades 9-12)  

• Special Needs

Education Needed/Other Requirements:  

• College bachelor’s degree (4 years), often with an Education major

• Background check 

• Student teaching experience 

• Subject-specific (for example, Math) exam(s)  

• Teacher preparation program(s) 

• State license(s)

Principal

Job Description:  

• Lead teachers and staff 

• Set goals and policies for teachers and students; plan academic calendar 

• Oversee day-to-day operations of school  

• Handle disciplinary matters 

• Manage a budget 

• Hire teachers and staff 

• Communicate with parents 

• Fund raising, sometimes

Types of Principals:  

• Elementary School (Grades K-5)  

• Middle School (Grades 6-8) 

• High School (Grades 9-12)  

• Charter School 

• Head Master of Private School 

​

Education Needed/Other Requirements:  

• College bachelor’s degree (4 years), often with an Education type major Background check 

• Student teaching experience 

• Subject-specific (for example, Math) exam(s)  

• Teacher preparation program(s) 

• State license(s) as a teacher 

• Several years of teaching experience 

• Master’s, specialist or doctorate degree in Education Administration

• State license(s) as education administrator 

• Several years of Assistant Principal experience
